Allergy, Asthma &
Immune System Conditions

Anaphylaxis option 1.jpg

Anaphylaxis is a multi-system life threatening condition that can be fatal. It is usually caused by a food allergy, drug allergy, or insect bite allergy. Symptoms include: hives, flushing, increased heart rate, runny nose, throat tightening, shortness of breath and wheezing, drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. An anaphylactic response requires immediate emergency care.

Asthma makes it hard for air to move in and out of the lungs and can begin at any age. While there is no cure yet, the goal for asthma therapy is to control and prevent the progression of asthma disease and emergencies. At Sher Allergy Specialists, we identify and treat the primary cause of airway inflammation, as well as the asthma symptoms, for all types of asthma, including:

  • Allergic asthma

  • Cough variant asthma

  • Eosinophilic asthma

  • Exercise-induced asthma

  • Occupational asthma

Chronic Cough & Throat Clearing

Chronic Cough is a serious medical condition with debilitating and disruptive consequences, like throat tickle, clearing of the throat, hoarseness, urinary incontinence, anxiety, and depression affecting professional performance, personal relationships, and social isolation. Dr. Mandel Sher is a world-renowned cough expert who has resolved cough in more than 8 out of 10 cough patients, including those who have been coughing for months or years and failed other therapies. He and his cough colleagues recently recognized Neurogenic cough caused by inflamed nerve endings in the back of the throat and respiratory tract. Sher Allergy will see you in our specialized Center For Cough clinic:

  • Gastroesophageal acid and non-acid reflux

  • Hoarseness

  • Hypersensitive cough syndrome

  • Laryngeal reflux

  • Neurogenic cough

  • Throat clearing

Drug Allergy

Drug allergy is an immune system response to an allergen in a medication like aspirin, penicillin, sulfa, and other antibiotics.  Common symptoms include: hives, rash, face swelling, and breathing problems. Symptoms can become more severe with each reaction resulting in life-threatening anaphylaxis. Through allergy testing you may find out that you are no longer allergic to certain drugs such as penicillin.

Dust Allergy

Dust is all over in every home! Pet dander, cockroach waste, mold, and dust mites are dust particles. Dust mites are highly allergenic. They are microscopic mites that love the heat and humidity of Florida and live in carpets, mattresses, pillows, box springs, and upholstered furniture. This year round, misery making allergy can become a thing of your past.

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema produces red and itchy skin commonly in children but it can also occur in adults. Eczema is often accompanied by Asthma or Hay Fever (allergic rhinits).  There is no cure yet but Sher Allergy Specialists offers a full range of treatment options to manage symptoms.

Eosinophilic Disorders

Eosinophilic disorders are increased levels of eosinophils (white blood cells that fight parasites and allergic reactions) in one or more places in the respiratory and digestive tracts (esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine (colon)). Sher Allergy diagnoses and treats all eosinophilic disorders.

Eye Allergy (Allergic Conjunctivitis)

Red, tearing, watery and itchy allergic eyes are often accompanied by nasal allergy (Allergic Rhinitis/Hay Fever). Triggers for eye allergy include: pollen from grass, trees, and weeds, pet dander, dust mites and mold.

Food Allergy

Food allergy can affect any one at any age. There is no cure. A severe reaction can result in life-threatening anaphylaxis. At Sher Allergy Specialists, we will help you to be your own best advocate to minimize exposure and risks. FDA-approved treatments to minimize risks from accidental exposure are available. See our full Food Allergy capabilities here.

Hives (Urticaria)

Most hives have no known cause (idiopathic hives). They generally look like raised red bumps that spread or disappear and reappear on the skin, and they almost always produce itching. Hives can be a chronic problem that lasts several weeks and comes and goes without explanation. Our Allergists will confirm diagnosis and offer treatment options to manage irritating and disruptive symptoms.

Immune Deficiency Disorders

Immune deficiency disorders may not be suspected until difficult to treat infections, recurrent pneumonia, ear infections or sinusitis, multiple courses of antibiotics to clear infections, or poor growth or weight loss become a concern.

Nasal & Environmental Allergy

Nasal allergy such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is an immune system response to an allergen that is inhaled such as dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen from trees, grass, and ragweed. Nasal allergy is associated with food allergy and asthma. Sher Allergy diagnoses and treats the following allergic and non-allergic environmental conditions:

  • Allergic rhinitis (Hay fever)

  • Allergic headaches

  • Dust allergy

  • Mold allergy

  • Fungus allergy

  • Environmental allergies

  • Pet animal allergies

  • Snoring

  • Vasomotor rhinitis (non-allergic rhinitis)

Pediatric Allergy, Asthma, & Immune System Disorders

Asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), atopic dermatitis (eczema), and food allergy are common conditions that disrupt childhood and family life. Sher Allergy Allergists are board-certified in both Pediatrics and Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Our goal is to restore children, teenagers, and families to fully engaged academic, recreational, and social development without the limitations of allergies and asthma. See our full Pediatric Allergy capabilities here.

Tooth pain and front headache from sinusitis are painful! They are caused by sinuses that do not drain mucus properly and produce bacterial or viral infection. Chronic sinusitis is associated with allergic rhinitis (hay fever and nasal allergies) or asthma. Sinusitis can cause persistent postnasal drip and chronic cough. Sher Allergy treats: sinusitis, nasal polyps, and recurrent/chronic infection.

Contact Skin Allergies

Got rash?  Have you worn a new cosmetic or perfume or jewelry? You may be having an allergic reaction, which is very different from an occasional skin irritation. Skin allergies carry the risk of future and more severe reactions. Other skin conditions we diagnose and treat are: Itching (Pruritus), Swelling (Angiodema) Rash, and Mastocytosis.

Venom Allergy (Stinging Insect Allergy)

Yellow jacket, hornet, fire ant, honey bee, and wasp stings can result in life-threatening anaphylaxis. Insect stings without reaction are not a predictor of the future and insect stings with reaction carry risk of more severe reaction next time. Symptoms may include: itching and hives, swelling in the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea or diarrhea.
