PEDIATRIC ALLERGY, ASTHMA, & IMMUNE SYSTEM DISORDERS

Sher Allergy Specialists’ Allergists are adult and pediatric allergy experts.

Children have unique needs that are best addressed by a pediatric allergy/immunology specialist. Because we are adult and pediatric Allergists/Immunologists, a child and family can grow-up with us and be expertly managed within our practice as they transition from childhood to adulthood.

SHER ALLERGY’S PEDIATRIC ALLERGIST DIFFERENCE

Sher Allergy Specialists’ pediatric Allergists/Immunologists love kids! Our Allergists/Immunologists are trained and board-certified in Pediatrics as well as Allergy and Immunology. Their pediatric and adolescent medicine training at Duke, Harvard, and University of Texas prepared them for pediatric and adult allergy, asthma, and immunology training at University of Michigan and University of South Florida. They “get” kids from infancy through the teenage years and are equally skilled at partnering with families for a child’s health and well-being.

Pediatric allergists are allergy, asthma, and immunology experts with a unique understanding of young people. Helping children feel relaxed and comfortable during the evaluation’s physical exam and allergy testing, and then through allergy treatment, is important to the child and very important to the on-looking caregivers. We understand allergies’ impact on a child’s life and physical and social development, as well as a family’s dynamic. Self-image, diet, school performance, sleep, and social development are formed during this important time. Pediatric Allergists’ unique expertise and perspective during this formative stage of life can make all the difference in how a child feels, functions, and flourishes.

WHEN SHOULD YOUR CHILD SEE A PEDIATRIC ALLERGIST?

Allergic conditions can occur at birth and any time thereafter. Allergy and immune testing can be accurately performed even in the first months of life. Your child is not “too young to benefit from an allergy consultation.” The right times to see the pediatric allergist are when you are concerned that your child may have an allergic or immune contribution to their recurrent or chronic symptoms or condition. Sher Allergy’s pediatric allergists get it right from the start! Our patient care philosophy is to do the least medicine to achieve the most good – this is especially true for our young patients. A trial and error approach used by other doctors may waste time and money, plus carry the added risks of side effects of unnecessary medications, procedures, and testing.

Common reasons parents bring their child to a pediatrician for a “sick” visit are runny nose and sneezing, recurrent ear infections, cough, congestion, stomach ache, diarrhea, and headaches. These symptoms could be nasal and environmental allergy or food allergy. Our pediatric allergists will diagnose the underlying condition contributing to your child’s symptoms.

Reasons to consult with a pediatric allergist/immunologist include:

  • Runny nose, watery eyes, itchiness, sneezing or coughing when there’s been no exposure to viral respiratory illness

  • Multiple ear, sinus or lung infections in a year

  • Breathing trouble including persistent cough and/or exercise intolerance

  • Infections requiring multiple antibiotics

  • School age children who have vomiting, diarrhea and /or rash after eating, who may actually have undiagnosed food allergies and are unknowingly exposed to the problem allergen at school

  • Children who may have drug allergies when taking antibiotics and other medications and experience diarrhea or nausea and vomiting

Some allergic, asthma, sinus, and immune system conditions may be outgrown as your child ages, but many may last a lifetime. And some of these conditions may be common and relatively minor and others may be more serious. When it comes to your child’s health and well being, nothing should be considered and treated as minor. Medical conditions during these formative years have implications for your child’s development. We understand the impact of allergic conditions on a child’s whole life as well as the family dynamic.
